I just took my first real road trip in my new AWD BZ4X and wanted to share some of my experiences. I drove from for a college visit with my daughter.

Overall, the trip was enjoyable, but charging times were definitely a factor. I used ABRP for planning and found it to be quite accurate in predicting battery usage. I relied heavily on slower chargers, which added time to the journey. I'm a bit disappointed with the charging speeds, especially compared to what other EVs can achieve.

For shorter trips with flexible schedules, the BZ4X is definitely manageable. However, I wouldn't recommend it for long road trips unless you have plenty of time to spare.

What were your experiences with charging BZ4X?

The bZ4X is definitely more suited for shorter trips, but with planning, it can handle road trips too. ABRP is such a great tool, I’ve used it a ton. For longer drives, I’d suggest sticking to DC fast chargers and keeping your stops to an 80% charge to save time. Preconditioning the battery before charging might help improve speed as well. Toyota keeps refining their charging tech to make long trips even easier in the future.

Charging speeds get a tiny bit better if you let the battery dip lower before plugging in, but even when it’s below 10-20% on a warm day, I’ve never seen it go past 65 kW. Honestly, if this thing could actually hit its claimed 100 kW peak and had a smoother charging curve, it’d be way more road trip-friendly.

That's so cool you took your BZ4X on its first road trip! College visits are a perfect excuse for a drive, huh? Glad you had a good time overall.

Sounds like you nailed it with the charging – slow chargers are a drag, right? I've heard the BZ4X isn't the fastest at charging, which is a bummer compared to some other EVs. ABRP is a lifesaver for EV road trips, good call using that!

It's interesting you say it's great for shorter trips but maybe not the best for super long ones unless you've got time to kill. That seems to be what everyone's saying. So, weekend getaways = awesome, cross-country treks = maybe not so much, unless you're patient.

I'm dying to know, what kind of range did you get, and did the AWD make a difference? Where did you usually stop to charge? Tell me all about it!

Thanks for sharing your road trip experience! Sounds like your college visit trip highlighted the charging times as the biggest challenge with the BZ4X. Using ABRP for planning is smart and glad to hear it was accurate for your range predictions. Hopefully, Toyota will address the charging speeds in future updates or models. It's a common consensus about the BZ4X being great for shorter trips but maybe not ideal for long hauls.

So, my son's 2024 FWD bZ4X charges pretty consistently around 113kW, although it does throttle back a bit sometimes. He can usually get from 15% to 80% in about 30 minutes, which is pretty good! And last night, he even saw it hit 120kW for a short period. That's impressive! Anyone else getting similar charging speeds with their bZ4X?
